Backpacking Tips: A Paris Campground Review

Paris hotels and hostels can be pricey. One way that we saved our travel budget during a recent trip to the city was pitching a tent in a Paris campground.

Paris has one campground located at Bois de Boulogne park and it is called Le Camping du Bois de Boulogne.

Because there are limited spaces for pitching a tent, I highly recommend reserving a spot if you plan to go to Le Camping du Bois de Boulogne during the high season. There are, however, a lot more spots for RV’s; though, booking ahead, especially in the summer, is still a good idea.

The Campground’s bathroom is large and decently, though, I would make it a point to bring your shower shoes. There is no extra charge for the showers at Le Camping du Bois de Boulogne and there is plenty of hot water.

There is Internet, not WiFi, but only if you pay to use the campground’s two computer stations in the camp office. Several people said the Internet was extremely slow, costly and unreliable. If you need an Internet connection, do not plan on being able to use one through the Le Camping du Bois de Boulogne campground.

A store and small restaurant are also located at Le Camping du Bois de Boulogne. And while the campground sells subway passes, we noticed that they overcharged for them in comparison to the Metro station.

Using public transportation to reach Le Camping du Bois de Boulogne:

Use the yellow Le Metro line, in downtown Paris, to the Porte-Maillot station, and then take the 244 bus to the bus stop in the park; the last bus is at 10 p.m. From the stop, it’s about a brief walk to the campground. Alternatively, the campground shuttle picks up passengers at the 244 bus stops and takes them through the park and directly to the campground for approximately 3 euro. The shuttle runs until midnight, and is probably the best option if you are traveling alone since the walk from the park bus stop to the campground is dark.
