How to transport a non running vehicle
The term Inop meaning inoperable is used by professionals in the auto transport industry to state if a vehicle is not in running condition. Other names for an inop vehicle may be non-running vehicle, salvage vehicle, rolling chassis, etc. Vehicles that may be considered an inop are vehicles with bad engines, bad transmissions, broken mechanical parts, damaged body structure, critical moving parts such as wheels, steering system, damaged or missing suspension parts / pieces, broken or missing drive shaft, broken or missing axles, etc. Anything on a vehicle that may stop it from moving and maneuvering under it’s own power may deem it an inoperable vehicle.
If you are booking transport services you will need to describe in detail any mechanical or structural problems that may be wrong with you vehicle before transport is arranged. It will benefit all parties involved in the transport process if everyone knows of any problems whether it in major or minor. When the carrier arrives for pickup, unknown problems with the vehicle or equipment can cause delays, load cancellations, or extra transport charges. You auto or equipment will be placed on the trailer in a specific spot based off of information that the truck driver and his dispatcher have received from you.
By the time the transport company dispatches their car carrier to pickup your automobile they have already arranged the loading of other vehicles on the trailer around your vehicles logistical needs. Distance of the origin and destination for all the cars, trucks and Suv’s on the trailer have been organized in a way to make the maximum profit. With that in mind it could greatly effect the transporters efficiency if your inop vehicle was thought to be an operable vehicle. Transport of your non running vehicle is not a problem if it is anticipated.
Inoperable vehicle transport cost can be zero to a couple hundred dollars extra depending on the cars physical and mechanical condition. For instance a vehicle missing a wheel will need to be forklifted on and off the trailer while a car with a blown motor may just require a push onto the trailer. All the cars on the trailer will be loaded according to their condition and logistic needs. The size of the car, truck or suv being transported will also determine price as space on the trailer is used up to the inch.
Items purchased from salvage auto auctions, car dealerships, private sellers, charities, repo auto auctions and more that are declared damaged or not running should be provided loading assistance from the seller. It is important to know what loading services the seller will provide before the transport trailer arrives for pickup. On top of that you will need to express the maximum abilities and resources you have to unload at the drop off. The reason for this is you do not want to be in a situation where the truck is trying deliver but you are unable to provide the needed amount assistance. The way to have a problem free auto transport experience is to explain in full detail the condition of the vehicle, your loading and unloading abilities, and better yet pictures of the vehicle or equipment being transported.
